Anionic Surfactants - Properties and Applications

Nov. 24, 2022

What are anionic surfactants?

Surfactants are chemicals that reduce surface tension between two liquids (or between a liquid and a solid, or a liquid and a gas) and are commonly used as cleaning agents. An anionic surfactant is a surfactant with a negative electrical charge.

What are the properties of anionic surfactants?

Anionic surfactant molecules are negatively charged at the hydrophilic end, causing substrates and dirt particles to be negatively charged so that they repel each other. This gives anionic surfactants extraordinary cleaning power. Anionic surfactants also produce large amounts of foam when agitated.

Because of their properties, anionic surfactants are used as the main active ingredient in soaps and chemical detergents. However, they are not very effective in removing oil stains.

Applications of anionic surfactants

Anionic surfactants are not exclusively used as detergents. They have many applications in a wide range of industries.

1. Cleaning agents. Anionic surfactants are primarily known as detergents for their excellent washing properties. They are used in soaps, detergents, and shampoos. Anionic surfactants produce large amounts of foam and are low-cost chemicals.

2. Emulsifier. Anionic surfactants are used as pesticide emulsifiers. They can effectively improve the chemical stability of pesticides and reduce costs and contamination. Anionic surfactants are added to insecticides, rust removers, and plant growth regulators to form soil conditioners.

3. Textile industry. Anionic surfactants are common in the textile industry. They are used from the pretreatment process to the finishing process. In addition, some functional products, such as leveling agents and color fixing agents, are also anionic.

4. Cosmetics industry. Anionic surfactants are mainly used as emulsifiers, solubilizers, and wetting agents in the cosmetic industry.

5. Wastewater treatment. Anionic surfactants can be used to treat domestic sewage and wastewater. They can effectively treat sludge and treat wastewater generated by various industries. These include paper, brewing, textiles, and dyeing.
